10 August 2022- Students and faculty from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) visited the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at the Asian Institute of Technology to learn about SET programs, research facilities, and laboratories.

A total of 29 undergraduate students, along with four faculties, Dr. Viroon Kamchoon, Dr. Rattapoohm Parichatprecha, Dr. Chortham Srinil, and Dr. Panumas Saingam, visited the AIT campus.
Welcoming the visitors, SET Dean Prof. Dieter Trau gave an overview of AIT and SET. He talked about different programs and courses available at AIT. He expressed delight and stressed the importance of such visits in extending collaboration between the two educational institutions. Similarly, Prof Nitin Tripathi talked about the Unified Bachelor’s-Master’s Degree Program.

This visit aimed to enhance outreach and promote the research activities and academic programs offered by the School of Engineering and Technology. Through partnership with various donors and organizations, SET has established advanced laboratories that function as a gateway to various innovations in engineering and technology. The students visited Hydraulics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Wind Tunnel Laboratories.

AIT’s Water Engineering and Management Hydraulics Laboratory cover an area of 1800 square meters, with a major portion reserved for carrying out large physical modeling experiments such as spillways, intakes, outlets, diversion tunnels, stilling basins, fish ladders, pumping stations, and other hydraulic structures.

Similarly, the students also observed the Structural Engineering Lab and witnessed the work being carried out in concrete and steel structures, earthquake-resistant design of structures, building and bridge engineering, and fire protection technology.

Dr. Kuo-Chieh Chao gave a brief presentation about the Geotechnical Engineering Lab. The GTE laboratory is used by students as well as for commercial purposes and provides facilities for research and testing in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and geophysical experiments.

Furthermore, the students also visited the Thammasat-AIT wind tunnel, located inside the Faculty of Engineering at Thammasat University, where they received instructions from Prof. Pennung Warnitchai. The students got the opportunity to learn about the wind tunnel and explore works carried out in the lab in a very interactive session.

In January 2020, AIT and KMITL signed an agreement to implement an International Unified Bachelor’s-Master’s Degree Program. The program provides an accelerated English-language pathway for KMITL students to earn a Bachelor’s degree awarded by KMITL and a Master’s degree awarded by AIT in a minimum of five years.

In the program, KMITL’s challenging undergraduate offerings combine with AIT’s emphasis on research and innovation, providing students with knowledge and skills for social impact and international exposure. The program stresses opportunities for students to broaden their experience through exchange programs and internships related to their chosen fields of study. At AIT, students will be challenged to apply their research to solve real-world problems through field exposure in Thailand and abroad.
