Prof. Damir Brdjanovic appointed as “Honorary Professor” at the School of Environment, Resources and Development

31 August 2022 – In recognition of his distinguished contribution to capacity development for sanitation through education, research, and innovation, Professor Damir Brdjanovic is awarded the title of an Honorary Professor to Environmental and Engineering and Management (EEM) and Regenerative Sanitation (RS) programs of the School of Environment, Resources, and Development, Asian Institute of Technology.

The appointment, which is for three years from 1 September 2022, allows Prof. Brdjanovic to contribute voluntarily to enhance the institute’s work.

Prof. Damir Brdjanovic is a Professor of Sanitary Engineering at IHE Delft Institute of Water Education and an Endowed Professor at the Delft University of Technology. His expertise includes pro-poor and emergency sanitation, fecal sludge management, urban drainage, and wastewater treatment. He has initiated developing and implementing innovative didactic approaches and novel educational products (including e-learning) at IHE Delft. Prof. Brdjanovic is co-founder and Director of the Global Sanitation Graduate School (GSGS), which has a project value of USD 6.0 million, funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

He has a lifetime dedication to capacity development for sanitation through education, research, and innovation: supervised 150 master’s students, 20 doctoral fellows and trained more than 10,000 professionals; he was involved in the accreditation of postgraduate programs; pioneered online education has initiated 30 credited online courses in the of wastewater treatment and sanitation; established Graduate Professional Diploma Program in Sanitary Engineering and Sanitation and the new MSc in Sanitation which is currently being transferred to 50 universities in Africa and Asia; three decades of actively building human and institutional capacity for sanitation in more than 30 countries worldwide.

With his wealth of project experience and extensive global network, Prof. Brdjanovic can help EEM/AIT generate broader support for academics/research/outreach and also help AIT to be known regionally and internationally in sustainable sanitation and wastewater treatment, potentially mentor faculty members on how to procure or approach financial resources, funding or large scale projects.
