The Aqua-Centre / Aquaculture and Aquatic Resource Management (AARM) program at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) recently concluded its innovatory Aquaculture Internship & Training (AI&T), an immersive program aimed at cultivating the skills of aspiring aquaculturists. The initiative, which ran from May 1 to Dec 31, 2022, with a budget of 0.835 million Thai Baht, saw a group of dedicated students engaged in diverse aquaculture activities.
Throughout the internship, participants delved into hands-on experiences, gaining insights into sustainable aquaculture practices. The program focused on addressing the critical issue of overfishing and illegal fishing by imparting knowledge on farming various aquatic species, including shrimp, crabs, catfish, tilapia, seabass, sea cucumber, sea horse, and more, on a large scale inland.
The innovative approach not only equipped the intern trainees with practical skills but also fostered a deeper understanding of the potential of inland aquaculture in alleviating fishing pressure on natural water bodies. The diverse range of activities provided a holistic view of aquaculture, from breeding and rearing techniques to ecosystem management.
With the successful completion of the AI&T program, AIT celebrates the contribution of its students to the field of sustainable aquaculture. The institute remains committed to offering educational programs, short-term, and outreach activities for nurturing future leaders who play a crucial role in shaping the future of aquaculture and addressing the global challenge of overfishing at a local, national, and global level.
