AIIB’s Director General visits AIT

March 9, 2023 – During a visit to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) campus, Mr. Rodrigo Salvado, Director General of the Operational Partnership Department at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in China, explored potential collaboration avenues among AIT, the Global Water & Sanitation Center (GWSC), and AIIB. Discussions were held on-site and online, including showcasing AIT’s academics, research, and outreach centers, introducing GWSC, and highlighting some of AIT’s projects.

The meeting identified the following area of cooperation and signing the letter of intent as a provisional collaboration framework:
• Workshop to engage clients/stakeholders in India and Indonesia for water and sanitation projects.
• Capacity building – workshops for alignment of AIIB’s E & S Framework with CWIS / integrating CWIS into an AIIB water project upstream.
• Resource mobilization for the water/climate adaptation sector – workshop with donors.

Participants included AIT’s President, Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto; AIT’s Vice President for Knowledge Transfer, Dr. Naveed Anwar; GWSC’s Co-Director, Prof. Sangam Shrestha; Manager, Dr. Kavinda Gunasekara; Ms. Isha Basyal, Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Technical Coordinator, Ms. Kimberly Tupaz. They were joined online by Dr. Roshan Shrestha, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Deputy Director in Global Growth and Opportunity Division, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WSH); GWSC’s Co-Director, Prof. Thammarat Koottatep; AIIB’s Senior Strategy Officer, Mr. Ping Yean Cheah; AIIB’s Senior Investment Operations Specialist (Urban), Mr. Sangmoo Kim; and AIIB’s Investment Officer specializing in Urban, Ms. Yuka Terada.

Before the meeting, Mr. Rodrigo also visited AIT’s hydraulics lab, EEM lab, and NATS lab. Mr. Rodrigo invited President Yamamoto to visit AIIB’s headquarters to exchange the letter of intent and signing of the MoU.
