Bangladesh Minister of Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives visits AIT to explore water and sanitation solutions

March 17, 2023: Hon. Minister Md. Tajul Islam from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, visited the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on March 17 to gain insights about the research, facilities, and resources available at AIT and the Global Water & Sanitation Center (GWSC). During his visit, AIT President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto and GWSC Co-Director Prof. Sangam Shrestha welcomed the Hon. Minister and provided him with an overview. 

The GWSC briefed the Hon. Minister on the support provided to “Digital to SMART Bangladesh” by strengthening and harmonizing existing public data systems through the Integrated Management Information System (IMIS), the National Sanitation Dashboard (NSD), and the integration between NSD and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) tracker for smooth data transfer and representation. Additionally, the GWSC presented its current project with Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to develop a technical guideline for citizens to manage on-site sanitation and a technological solution for the authority to manage fecal sludge generated in Banani, Baridhara, Gulshan & Niketan areas.

The Hon. Minister also visited AIT laboratories to learn about the potential replication of water management modeling, prefabricated wastewater treatment products’ performance testing, proficiency testing, and analytical laboratory activities in DPHE as well as ongoing research performed by AIT students. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase innovative solutions and is expected to lead to a more comprehensive and sustainable water and sanitation management system in Bangladesh.
