Prof. Hiran Dias, aformer faculty member of the School of Environment, Resources and Development , passed away peacefully at his home in Sri Lanka. He was 80 years old.
Prof. Dias obtained his MA and PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge, and was the Professor of Geography and President at the University of Sri Lanka, Colombo Campus before joining the Asian Institute of Technology.
In AIT, he was a Professor of Rural Development Planning and served as the Head of the Human Settlements Division. His contributions as an academician and teacher, and as a development consultant for various Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations, international agencies, and rural poverty alleviation projects are widely recognized, and his presence in the public arena will be greatly missed.
