16 August 2023 – AIT signed a memorandum of understanding with the Guangzhou Greater Bay Area Modern Industry Development Research Institute (GBA-MIDRI) on 16 August 2023 that could allow for the development of some customized post-graduate programs earmarked for China’s fast-growing innovation and high-tech hub.

GBA-MIDRI executives meeting with AIT President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto during a visit to AIT in March 2023.

GBA-MIDRI is a research institution under the Guangzhou Federation of Industry and Commerce, which aims to build a high-end think tank for the Greater Bay Area and assist the government in industrial decision-making and guide the new development of modern industries.

Based in Guangzhou, China, GBA-MIDRI undertakes major research projects commissioned by national ministries, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the China Society for Information Economics, as well as provincial and municipal governments, highlighting consulting solutions for the integration of artificial intelligence, digital economy and modern industries.

The agreement followed an exploratory meeting by GBA-MIDRI officials with President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto at AIT in March 2023, and a two-day follow up AIT mission on June 29-30 in Guangzhou to GBA-MIDRI headquarters by Mr. Shawn Kelly, Executive Director of the Office of International and Public Affairs (OIPA) and Ms. Danielle Duan, Coordinator, OIPA.

The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area is a large megalopolis consisting of nine mega cities of Guangdong province: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Huizhou, and Zhaoqing as well as two special administrative regions, Hong Kong, and Macau. Boasting a population of more that 70 million, the GBA is a powerful financial and technological driver for the world’s second largest economy.

Both sides have expressed optimism that the partnership can enable the development of new postgraduate programs and projects in 2024 focused on technology, innovation and entrepreneurship sectors.
