14 December 2023: The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) marked its 140th Graduation Ceremony, a jubilant affair where 193 students proudly donned their graduation attire to receive well-earned degrees. Noteworthy was a special ceremony honoring 91 students who triumphed over the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic during their academic journey. This special event was held for  graduates from the May 2020 to December 2021 cohorts when AIT did not held any onsite graduation events due to the pandemic.

The event highlighted the remarkable achievements of students hailing from the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), and the School of Management (SOM).

During his address to the graduates, AIT President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto extended heartfelt congratulations, acknowledging the day’s significant achievement as a testament to their hard work and dedication. He emphasized that the graduates now join the proud AIT alumni network, comprising over 26,000 individuals across 105 countries and territories. Prof. Yamamoto stated, “Your degree marks the commencement of a lifelong learning journey. AIT has not only imparted knowledge but also essential skills for an ever-changing world. As you pass through the AIT Main Gate as a Graduate, cherish your roots, take pride in your journey, have faith in your future, and embrace the limitless possibilities ahead.”

The ceremony took place in two sessions and was graced by dignitaries from different nations, as well as the graduates and their families.

In the morning session, Mr. Yeap Swee Chuan, President and CEO of AAPICO Hitech Public Company Limited, recalled his journey from humble beginnings to automotive industry leadership, emphasizing hard work, honesty, and resilience. He shared a threefold formula for success—Intelligence Quotient (IQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ), and Love Quotient (LQ)—emphasizing the indispensable roles of emotional intelligence and love in overall success. He urged graduates to become exemplary leaders through honesty, sacrifice, and recognizing duties, drawing inspiration from his parents. Additionally, Mr. Yeap encouraged resilience and self-appreciation, suggesting that viewing life problems as opportunities could alleviate stress.

In both sessions, Ms. Eri Honda, President of AIT Alumni Association-Japan Chapter and an AIT alum from the class of 1985, shared her professional journey. She began at the Japan International Cooperation Agency before migrating to the Asian Development Bank. Addressing the graduates, she emphasized the value of their AIT education and unique cultural experiences, urging them to leverage these in their careers. Ms. Honda offered three pieces of advice: maintain a positive mindset, be open to new ideas, and cultivate good listening skills for building relationships and enhancing performance. Despite global challenges, she expressed hope in the graduates’ potential to contribute to a better society, wishing them good health, success, and strong connections with fellow alumni.

Dr. Muhammad Umar of the Food Engineering and Bioprocess Technology (FEBT) Program at SERD, delivered a speech representing AIT students, drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s words on education as a catalyst for change. He underscored that the academic journey encompasses not only scholarly pursuits but also the cultivation of personal qualities like self-confidence, resilience, and adaptability. Reflecting on the challenges faced in 2020, he commended the community’s collective resilience. Dr. Umar emphasized the enriching international environment at AIT, fostering understanding and respect for cultural differences. Encouraging fellow graduates to leverage their education as global citizens for positive change, he expressed gratitude to faculty, staff, and families for their support, concluding with heartfelt congratulations to the December 2023 class.

On behalf of the Special Graduating students, Dr Apantri Peungnumsai of the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) from SET, reflected on her AIT journey amidst the challenges of the pandemic, noting the initial on-site experiences before the shift to online classes. Despite the reduced interaction, she commended AIT for handling the transition smoothly. During her research year, in-person meetings resumed, and AIT allowed on-site events, showcasing its cultural diversity. Grateful for the familiar surroundings in Thailand during COVID, she regretted the limitations on hosting friends for trips. The 2021 online graduation lacked the usual ceremony, but individual photo sessions provided cherished memories. For the 2023 special graduation, she appreciated the opportunity to reunite and reminisce about AIT. Dr. Peungnumsai expressed gratitude to AIT for hosting the special ceremony for those who missed the full graduation experience.

The multicultural atmosphere, where people from different countries learn and respect each other’s cultures, is truly special. I’m grateful for AIT’s support in overcoming language challenges and boosting my confidence. The institution played a crucial role in imparting knowledge about agriculture, fostering independence, confidence, and empowerment.
