31 January 2024: Prof. Qiu Yong, Chairperson of the University Council at Tsinghua University led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Asian Institute of Technology aimed at forging enhanced international cooperation between the two institutions.
Organized by the Office of International and Public Affairs, the special stop by China’s top university was highlighted by a formal meeting with AIT President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto and senior institute officials.
“It’s our great pleasure to be at AIT on my first time to Thailand, and I am delighted that there are already links between our universities,” Prof. Qiu said. “I hope through this exchange we will further strengthen our cooperation in the future.”
The secretary of the CPC Tsinghua Committee stressed that in the twenty-first century, internationalization is very important for every university in the world. He highlighted Tsinghua University’s global strategy and a number of successful strategic collaborations and joint centers with global universities in Asia and around the world.
“We emphasize global connection and international enrichment for our students as a key to their future,” the Chairman stressed, adding that Tsinghua intends to engage more with higher education partners in Thailand.
AIT President Yamamoto echoed the vital importance of growing academic exchanges and networks to solve universal challenges such as climate change and achieving the sustainable development goals.
President Yamamoto emphasized the institute’s advantageous positioning and international composition, and its mission to support the sustainable development of the region and achievement of the SDGs through higher education cooperation.
Indicating his strong support for deeper and higher-level mutual cooperation, the president invited Tsinghua University academicians to spend time teaching and conducting research at AIT as seconded faculty members.
Inviting President Yamamoto to visit the Tsinghua University campus, Prof. Qiu said China and Thailand enjoy a long history of friendship and this is an ideal time to develop more partnerships.
Influential on the global stage, Tsinghua University is consistently ranked among the top universities in the Asia-Pacific. It is also distinguished by its global level research prowess. In 2021, it was ranked 3rd among universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings.
The visit to AIT by Prof. Qiu was as a part of a 4-day Tsinghua University mission to Thailand to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The itinerary also included meetings with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn; Thailand Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi; Dhanin Chearavanont, Senior Chairman of the Charoen Pokphand Group Company, Ltd.; Mr. Han Zhiqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand; officials at the construction site of the China-Thailand Railway; and representatives of Tsinghua alumni in Thailand.
