International Education in Exchange Program: A Journey from Thailand to Tsukuba, Japan

My name is Sichai Pongpayuha. I recently graduated with a master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Infrastructure Management Program from the School of Engineering and Technology at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in May 2024. My academic journey was enriched by an exchange program at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, a period that significantly shaped my research and professional outlook.

In September 2023, I embarked on this transformative journey to Tsukuba, located a mere 45 minutes from Tokyo by the Tsukuba Express. Arriving in the late summer, which was reminiscent of the warmth back home in Thailand, I experienced the gradual onset of autumn, a season absent in my homeland, Thailand. This brought about a stunning transformation of the foliage, marking my academic and cultural immersion into Japan.

Amid the seasonal shift, I had the privilege of participating in the 13th Asia Smart City Conference (ASCC) held in Yokohama, where I met Mr. Chadchart Suttipant, the Governor of Bangkok. This opportunity was made possible thanks to the Thai Students’ Association in Japan under Royal Patronage (TSAJ). The event highlighted potential collaborations between cities and enhanced my understanding of urban sustainability practices.

As the winter season began, with temperatures dropping to as low as -7°C, I engaged in various winter sports such as skiing, ice skating etc., making the most of the geographic and climatic advantages of the region. This period also allowed me to connect with the Thai Students Association at the University of Tsukuba (TSAT), fostering a network and promoting Thai culture internationally.

Culturally, Japan offered numerous opportunities to delve into its rich traditions through activities such as tea ceremonies, mochi making, and attending sumo tournaments. These experiences broadened my cultural perspectives and deepened my appreciation for Japan’s heritage.

During my time at the University of Tsukuba, I immersed myself in a comprehensive curriculum in environmental sciences, seamlessly interconnecting various courses. I began with “Introduction to Environmental Sciences,” establishing foundational knowledge, complemented by “Exercises in Environmental Sciences,” providing practical application. As my studies progressed, I expanded my horizons with courses like “Introduction to Water Environment” and “Solid Waste Management Systems Planning,” delving into aquatic ecosystems and learning strategies to tackle environmental challenges. “Environmental Psychology” offered valuable insights into human behavior’s role in environmental issues, enriching my understanding.

As I advanced, I actively participated in the “Lab Seminar in Environmental Sciences ” applying theory in a hands-on setting. Simultaneously, I honed my research skills and explored specialized topics in the “Thesis Seminar in Environmental Sciences”. This interconnected curriculum equipped me with a holistic understanding of environmental sciences, blending theory and practice seamlessly.

Academically, my research titled “Sustainability Performance Assessment of Mass Rapid Transit in the Metropolitan Areas: A Comparative Study of Tokyo and Bangkok” advanced significantly under the guidance of my supervisor, Dr. Djoen San Santoso from the CEIM program at AIT. Additionally, I am grateful to Dr. Takeshi Mizunoya at the Social Environmental Systems and Policy Design Laboratory at the University of Tsukuba for providing me with the opportunity to work in his lab. Thank you for the facilities that were made available to me and the wonderful lab mates who were always there to help. This experience not only honed my research skills but also provided a platform for valuable academic exchanges and personal growth.

I am immensely grateful for the support from the Royal Thai Government – AIT Scholarships, Dr. Rafiul Ahad and Mrs. Frances Kasala Ahad – Student Exchange Scholarship from the Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs, Thai Student’s Association of the University of Tsukuba (TSAT), my supervisors and staff in both AIT and the University of Tskuba and the International Affairs Unit of the Office of International and Public Affairs of AIT for providing this wonderful student exchange opportunity.

This international experience has been a cornerstone of my academic journey, influencing my approach to sustainable urban development and preparing me for a future where I can contribute significantly to the field.
