Ms. Nawapat Choosuwan, a master’s student in Urban Innovation and Sustainability at the Department of Development and Sustainability (DDS), School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) shares her experience of an exchange program at Jönköping University (JU):
Embarking on an exchange program at Jönköping University (JU) in Sweden for the Autumn semester of 2023 was the realization of a long-held dream. Studying abroad has always been a goal of mine, and Sweden holds a special place as my ultimate destination.
The country’s renowned educational standards, stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and diverse international community made it the perfect choice for my academic journey.
The opportunity to join the exchange program at JU represented a significant milestone in realizing my aspirations, providing a unique chance to enhance my academic pursuits and expand my professional network. The moment I received the acceptance email from JU, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of excitement and gratitude. This joy was further magnified when I learned that I had been awarded the AITAA Thailand Chapter Student Exchange Scholarship, a gesture for which I am deeply honored and appreciative.

My adventure began upon my arrival at Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport on August 18, 2023. I was warmly welcomed into a diverse community of roommates hailing from various countries including Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Hungary, Switzerland, Turkey, the USA, Spain, and Azerbaijan. Their kindness and willingness to share moments and offer assistance made my stay exceptionally enjoyable.
JU boasted an impressive international student population of about 2,300 from 120 countries out of a total student body of 12,600, with approximately 300 exchange students from 36 different countries in the autumn of 2023. This diverse environment underscored JU’s reputation as an attractive destination for students worldwide seeking an inclusive and global educational experience. Despite my initial concerns about the language barrier, living in JU proved to be remarkably seamless due to the locals’ proficiency in English and their readiness to help whenever needed.
Engaging in academic courses at JU allowed me to delve into subjects offered by the School of Engineering and the School of Education and Communication, with a focus on the Global Studies program and sustainability courses. These courses not only aligned with my academic interests but also significantly broadened my knowledge base, despite the challenges they presented. The exchange program proved pivotal in introducing me to the nuances of the European education system and technologies, thereby enhancing my ability to thrive in an international setting.

Beyond academics, I actively participated in extracurricular activities and events, such as the Go Exchange Fair and Culture Day, where I had the opportunity to showcase Thai culture and cuisine. These experiences fostered a sense of community and mutual appreciation among students from diverse backgrounds, enriching our exchange experience.
During my free time, I seized the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty and rich history of Sweden, as well as neighboring countries such as Denmark and Norway. These travels not only provided me with unforgettable memories but also deepened my appreciation for European cultures and landscapes.
As my exchange program concluded earlier than expected, I extended my travels to other European countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria, during the festive Christmas season. These journeys were more than mere sightseeing tours; they were immersive experiences that left a lasting impact on my personal growth and cultural understanding.
Participating in the exchange program at JU was an invaluable experience that significantly enriched both my academic knowledge and personal growth. I am deeply grateful to the faculty members and staff at AIT for their support. Special thanks go to my advisor, Dr. Malay Pramanik, for his invaluable guidance, School of Environment, Resources and Development, International Affairs- OIPA, Office of Advancement & Alumni Affairs for her support throughout the scholarship application process. Their unwavering support played a crucial role in making this enriching experience possible. It truly was an adventure of a lifetime—one that I will forever cherish.
