My name is Mallappa J. Madolli, and I am a doctoral student in Agricultural Systems and Engineering at the Department of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources, School of Environment Resources and Development at AIT.

I am thrilled to share that I had the incredible opportunity to attend the “6th Workshop on Water Resources in Developing Countries: Hydroclimate Modeling, Information Tools and Simulation Techniques” from May 20th to May 31st, 2024, at the renowned Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

This workshop was organized with a prestigious grant from the ICTP, co-sponsored by UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency. This grant covered all expenses, including airfare, accommodation, daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and health insurance.

This prestigious program brought together experts and aspiring researchers from around the globe to delve into the latest advancements and research in hydroclimate modeling. It was an honor to learn from leading scientists and engage in thought-provoking discussions and lab sessions about hydroclimate modeling, information tools, and simulation techniques. I am especially proud to have presented a poster and given a presentation during the event. Sharing my research and receiving feedback from such a knowledgeable and experienced audience was truly rewarding. Some highlights of the experience included:

  • In-depth lectures on the fundamentals and advancements in hydroclimate modeling, information tools, and simulation techniques.
  • Hands-on workshops and simulations.
  • Presenting my poster and giving a group presentation.
  • Studying key topics such as Satellite precipitation estimation at CHRS UCI: Algorithm Development & Challenges; the CHyM hydro modelling & CORDEX-CORE climate projections and CHyM discharge ensemble projections; and Land surface modelling and eCLM.
  • Networking with professionals and fellow enthusiasts in the field from different countries from Europe, Latin America, USA, and South Asian countries.

I also had the opportunity to explore the beautiful and historic cities of Trieste and Venice. Trieste, with its retro charm, boasts historic literary cafés and Habsburg-era monuments. It’s a diverse, international city worth experiencing at least once. Highlights in Trieste include the Grand Canal, Miramare Castle, Molo Audace, Barcola, and Piazza Unità’s town hall. Venice, one of the most beautiful cities I have visited, exudes timeless charm and is a contemporary art capital. Comprised of 118 islands linked by over 400 bridges and bustling canals, Venice is a magical place filled with gondolas and boats.

I am immensely grateful for this enriching experience and excited to apply the knowledge and skills gained to contribute to the field of hydroclimatology. A huge thank you to the ICTP workshop organizers, participants, my supervisor, Dr. Sushil Kumar Himanshu, and AIT for making this beautiful and impactful experience possible.
