The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) recently hosted the BUPT-AIT International Camp for Young Leaders 2024, a 13-day experiential learning program aimed at cultivating the next generation of youth leaders in digital transformation and international collaboration.

Running from July 23 to August 5, the camp united select undergraduate and graduate students from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), China, under the theme “Youth Empowerment: Promoting Digital Transformation and a Global Perspective.”
Emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches, the event exposed Chinese participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to address international challenges, through the lens of AIT academicians and Thailand as the backdrop. In his opening address on July 24, AIT President Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto emphasized the importance of the AIT-BUPT partnership in empowering young minds to tackle the world’s most urgent challenges.
A Unique Opportunity for Cross-Disciplinary Learning
Participants from BUPT, a leading Chinese institution specializing in information and telecommunications technology, gained from a rigorous program of lectures, expert panels, and site visits as part of the 2024 BUPT-AIT International Camp. The curriculum was designed to offer in-depth insights into cutting-edge research and technology projects, with a focus on innovation management, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and leadership.
Camp-goers also benefited from cultural exchanges and global networking opportunities with counterpart young leaders and experts in Thailand. The cross-cultural interactions broadened students’ perspectives and enhanced their capacity for global collaboration, BUPT faculty said.

Empowering the Youth as Agents of Change
One of the camp’s core objectives was to train young leaders to become positive agents of change, capable of contributing to inclusive governance, peace, and sustainability. Through a blend of classroom learning, cultural immersion, and collaborative projects, students developed their own innovative solutions to global challenges.
Prof. Yamamoto expressed his optimism about the impact of the camp, stating: “The friendships you forge, the knowledge you gain, and the perspectives you share here will be invaluable assets as you navigate the complexities of the digital era.”

A Step Towards a More Prosperous and Resilient Future
As the first event of its kind, the BUPT-AIT International Camp for Young Leaders 2024 represented a significant step forward in fostering international collaboration and youth empowerment. By the end of the program, students unveiled group projects that tackled issues related to digitalization and global collaboration, showcasing the skills and knowledge they gained while at AIT.
The camp not only strengthens the academic and professional journey of the participants but also contributes to a broader goal of building a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous global society.
Shawn Kelly, AIT Executive Director of International and Public Affairs said the 2-week program was a significant milestone in the growing partnership between AIT and BUPT that captured the two institutions’ shared vision of empowering youth to lead with empathy, innovation, and a global perspective.

Fostering Faculty Collaboration and Innovation
The BUPT-AIT International Camp for Young Leaders 2024 also represented a significant opportunity for faculty collaboration between the two institutions. Building on the momentum of the AIT-BUPT Future Lab, a joint initiative launched earlier this year to harness the expertise of both universities in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), faculty members from AIT and BUPT united to create a curriculum that addressed both the technical aspects of digital transformation and the broader humanistic and societal issues necessary for a well-rounded education.
This interdisciplinary collaboration brought together faculty from diverse fields – including computer science, environmental engineering, humanities, and social sciences – to share knowledge and innovative teaching approaches for an enriching academic experience for students.

“By co-creating the camp’s content, AIT and BUPT faculty members have combined their distinct perspectives and academic strengths, resulting in a more comprehensive and holistic learning experience for the students,” said Prof. Yuosre Badir, Dean of the AIT School of Management.
