20 August 2024: Hi! I am Emilie Badert. In January 2024, I embarked on an incredible adventure as an exchange student at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. Hailing from Université Côte d’Azur in France, I was thrilled at the prospect of immersing myself in the vibrant culture and rich landscapes of this beautiful country.

Arriving at AIT’s picturesque campus was like entering a hidden paradise. Surrounded by lush greenery and nestled within a canopy of trees, it provided a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Every morning, I savored leisurely walks through the mangrove, marveling at the exotic wildlife and finding solace in the serene ambiance of the outdoor coffee spots where I often studied.
My time at AIT was incredibly enriching, both academically and personally. I enrolled in the Water Engineering and Management program offered by the AIT School of Engineering and Technology, which provided me with opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills. Throughout my studies at AIT, I had the privilege of working on a wide array of projects, each with its own unique set of challenges and learning opportunities. These projects spanned various aspects of water engineering, from hydrological modeling to sustainable water resource management, and required a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. The guidance I received from supportive teachers and the access to abundant study materials played a crucial role in enhancing my understanding and capabilities. The faculty at AIT, renowned for their expertise and dedication, were always available to provide insights and mentorship, fostering an environment conducive to academic growth and innovation.

One of the most impactful aspects of my academic experience at AIT was the emphasis on practical application. The theoretical foundation provided in the classroom was complemented by real-world assignments and projects that demanded critical and creative thinking. This approach ensured that I not only understood the concepts but could also apply them effectively in practical scenarios. For instance, our weekly sessions with Prof. Mukand Singh Babel were particularly enlightening. During these sessions, we delved into specific modeling software, which was instrumental in teaching us various aspects of water engineering. We learned to simulate water quality analysis, model reservoirs to achieve diverse operational objectives, and understand the effects of pumping on groundwater.
These hands-on experiences were invaluable. They not only enhanced my confidence in my technical abilities but also empowered me to take on leadership roles and contribute to solving complex global issues. The projects and assignments pushed me to think beyond conventional solutions and explore innovative approaches to water management.

Beyond academics, my time at AIT was also marked by significant personal growth. The diverse and multicultural environment at AIT exposed me to different cultures, ideas, and perspectives, fostering a sense of global citizenship. I forged meaningful friendships and professional connections that have continued to benefit me in my career. The collaborative spirit at AIT encouraged teamwork and networking, skills that are crucial in the professional world.
Living in Thailand was an adventure in itself. The country’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes offered endless opportunities for exploration. The modular system at AIT allowed us to take breaks and venture to different parts of the country. Accompanied by my friend and classmate Johanna Creze who also came with me on this exchange program, we spent time on the southern islands, diving into the turquoise waters of Krabi, soaking up the sun in Koh Lanta, and even experiencing the vibrant nightlife on a party boat in Koh Phi Phi. After our adventures in the south, we were eager to delve deeper into Thai culture and traditions. This led us to Chiang Mai in the north, where we immersed ourselves in the teachings of Buddhism and explored the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Our bucket list was filled with diverse experiences, from cooking local dishes to spending a weekend at an elephant sanctuary, learning the art of tea-making, participating in a meditation retreat, uncovering hidden gems in Bangkok, celebrating the world’s largest water festival – Songkran, and sailing along the majestic Mekong River. Each journey was an opportunity to learn, grow, and create unforgettable memories. Cooking classes in Bangkok allowed us to master the art of Thai cuisine, while the elephant sanctuary visit taught us about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting these gentle giants. Songkran, the Thai New Year, was a highlight of our stay. We joined the locals in the traditional water fights, which symbolize washing away bad luck and starting anew. The festival was a joyous celebration filled with laughter, music, and a sense of community. Another unforgettable experience was sailing along the Mekong River, where we marveled at the stunning landscapes and vibrant river life.

As my exchange program drew to a close, I reflected on the amazing journey I had embarked upon. My time at AIT had been a period of profound growth, both academically and personally. I had gained new insights, developed practical skills, and forged deep connections.
Leaving AIT and Thailand was bittersweet. While I was excited to return home and share my experiences with friends and family, I knew I would miss the serene campus, the vibrant culture, and the wonderful people I had met. However, I carried with me a wealth of knowledge, cherished memories, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Overall, my experience as a student at AIT was enlightening. The academic rigor, combined with practical application, enhanced my confidence and provided a more open-minded perspective on the world. I used this time to reconnect with myself and embrace the present moment fully. Getting to know Thai culture and the local people was a unique and enriching experience. It was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, an adventure that I will cherish for a lifetime.

I wholeheartedly recommend AIT to anyone considering it, especially the Water Engineering and Management Program, as it is truly rewarding in every aspect. My exchange program was a life-changing experience. The combination of academic excellence, cultural immersion, and personal growth opportunities, coupled with the chance to explore the beautiful country of Thailand, makes AIT an ideal destination for students seeking a transformative experience. My time at AIT has equipped me with valuable skills, cherished memories, and deep friendships. I am grateful for this incredible adventure and the lasting impact it has had on my life.
