19 September 2024 – Prof. P Abdul Salam, Dean of the School of Environment, Resources, and Development (SERD) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC).
Established in 1984, the IIEC is a global leader in promoting energy efficiency, particularly in developing nations. The organization collaborates with governments, industries, and other key stakeholders to implement policies that encourage energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy, aiming to reduce energy consumption, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and foster sustainable economic development. The nine-member Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of IIEC’s mission to advance sustainable energy solutions in emerging economies and regions in transition.
Prof. Salam, a renowned professor in the Sustainable Energy Transition Program at AIT, brings more than 30 years of global experience in research, consultancy, and capacity building. His areas of expertise include bioenergy, waste-to-energy systems, renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, and climate change mitigation strategies. Over his distinguished career, he has authored six books, contributed over 110 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, and has been an active voice in numerous industry and development reports.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Prof. Salam has served as General Manager and Chief Design Engineer of an energy services company, where he led major consultancy projects, feasibility studies, and project implementations. His leadership in driving research and industrial projects, funded by international organizations and UN agencies, has had a significant impact on the global energy landscape. His outstanding contributions to the field have earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Thailand Frontier Researcher Award for Engineering in 2016.
Prof. Salam’s appointment to the IIEC Board reflects his continued dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions and further strengthens AIT’s role in global energy and climate initiatives.
