24 December 2024: The Asian Institute of Technology expresses its heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dr. Tongchat Hongladaromp, a distinguished alumnus and visionary leader who served as the tenth Chairman of the AIT Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2023. In 2010, Dr. Tongchat was also inducted into the AIT Hall of Fame in recognition of his remarkable achievements and steadfast dedication to AIT and Thailand.

Dr. Tongchat earned his Master’s in Structural Engineering from AIT in 1962 and later completed his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, USA in 1967. From 1969 to 1976, he contributed to AIT’s academic and research endeavours, serving as a faculty member in the Department of Structural Engineering, and as Director of Computer Center, playing a crucial role in establishing AIT’s Regional Computer Center (AITRCC).
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Tongchat’s forward-thinking leadership had a transformative impact on Thailand’s infrastructure and energy sectors. He served as the Governor of the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand and as the founding Governor of the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (now PTT Public Co. Ltd.). Dr. Tongchat also set up the National Petrochemical Corporation (NPC) and the PTT Exploration and Production Co. Ltd. (PTTEP). His illustrious career also included senior advisory roles in several public and private institutions, including as Chairman of KMUTT and Chairman of the Board of Directors of TMB Asset Management Co. Ltd.
Dr. Tongchat received several prestigious Royal Thai Orders and Decorations in recognition of his contribution to the nation. In 1978, he was honored with the title of Companion (Fourth Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant. His distinguished contributions were further recognized in 1984 when he ascended to the rank of Knight Commander (Second Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant and in 1985, when he received the prestigious Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand. In 1989, Dr. Tongchat received the title of Grand Companion (Third Class, Special Grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao. In 2000, his exceptional service was once again celebrated as he was bestowed the title of Knight Commander (Second Class, Normal Grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao. These honors reflect his excellence, outstanding leadership, and enduring commitment to Thai society.
Dr. Tongchat’s passing leaves a deep void in the AIT community, and his vision, leadership, and friendship will be sorely missed. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues as we honor the legacy of a true pioneer whose contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
