AIT’s Dr. Wenchao Xue has been appointed as a Young Affiliate of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the East and South-East Asia and the Pacific Regions. The appointment, which spans from 2024 to 2029, recognizes Dr. Xue’s contributions to environmental science and technology.
TWAS is a merit-based science academy established for advancing science in developing countries, uniting more than 1,400 scientists in over 100 countries. Headquartered in Trieste, Italy, TWAS supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy.

The TWAS Young Affiliates program annually selects up to 25 scientists under the age of 40 for a six-year tenure, during which they can engage with TWAS Fellows, participate in General Meetings and Conferences, and contribute to initiatives hosted by TWAS Regional Partners.
Dr. Xue is Associate Professor and Academic Program Chair of Environmental Engineering and Management. Her research focuses on water pollution control, energy and resource recovery from wastewater, monitoring and eliminating environmental contaminants, and sustainable watershed management. She is also the founding director of AIT’s Belt and Road Research Center.
Expressing her gratitude for the recognition, Dr. Xue said, “Being appointed as a Young Affiliate of TWAS is an honor. This appointment inspires me to continue contributing to global challenges through research and collaboration.”
