“Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” International Human Rights Day

03 Dec 2024
School of Environment, Resources and Development

Every year on December 10, the world comes together to celebrate International Human Rights Day, a day dedicated to reflecting on the universal values of dignity, equality, and freedom. This date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, a groundbreaking document that asserts the inalienable rights of all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, language, political affiliation, or any other status. It remains a cornerstone of global human rights advocacy and a testament to humanity’s collective commitment to justice and equality.
This year’s theme, Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” underscores the profound impact that human rights have on our daily lives. It’s a call to recognize the immediacy of these rights—not as abstract ideals but as active agents of change shaping our present and future. In his message UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “Human rights are under assault […] This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are about building the future — right now […] We must stand up for all rights — always.”

The Intersection of Human Rights and Feminism
In the context of the feminist movement, the relevance of human rights cannot be overstated. Advocacy for gender equality and justice is intrinsically linked to the universal principles enshrined in the UDHR. The fight for equal pay, the right to education, freedom from violence, and reproductive rights are all expressions of the feminist movement’s commitment to human rights. Human Rights Day also marks the culmination of the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence,” highlighting the critical importance of combating violence against women and girls as a fundamental human rights issue.

Human Rights at AIT: An Academic and Research Priority
At AIT, the Gender and Development Academic Program (GDS)  places human rights at the core of its academic discourse and research. Courses such as “Gender and Human Rights” engage students in understanding the intersections between gender and human rights, fostering a comprehensive view of how systemic inequalities impact different groups. Many other courses delve into the human rights challenges faced by indigenous women, people with disabilities, displaced and migrant populations, and LGBTQ+ communities, ensuring a holistic approach to these complex issues.

Through this curriculum, students not only explore theoretical frameworks but also contribute to real-world impact. Research by GDS students often addresses critical human rights concerns, examining issues such as violence against women in conflict zones, the marginalization of vulnerable groups, and the rights of displaced individuals. These projects amplify the voices of the underrepresented and push for transformative policy changes.

Human Rights as a Transformative Force
As we commemorate Human Rights Day, it is essential to remember the transformative power of these universal principles. Human rights serve as a preventive, protective, and transformative force in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. By safeguarding these rights and embedding them in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities, we pave the way for a more equitable and just society.
Let us take this day as an opportunity to reflect on how we, as individuals and institutions, can uphold and advocate for these rights. At AIT, our commitment to fostering human rights remains unwavering, through our academic programs, research, and actions that aim to create a future rooted in dignity, equality, and justice for all.
