6 January 2025: The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) welcomed a vibrant cohort of new students, marking the beginning of an exciting academic journey. The 2025 academic term commenced with a hybrid orientation on 6 January.

In his address, AIT President Prof. Pai-Chi Li warmly welcomed students to their new academic home, encouraging them to embrace interdisciplinary research, real-world problem-solving, and cross-cultural collaboration. He urged students to engage actively in projects and campus activities, emphasizing AIT’s commitment to equipping them with the skills needed to address global challenges. Prof. Li reassured students of the support from the AIT community, fostering an environment for collaboration, achievement, and societal impact.

This semester, 146 students—105 enrolled in regular Master’s and PhD programs, and 41 in exchange and visiting programs from partner institutions—joined AIT from 23 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa. Among them, 34% enrolled in the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), 38% in the School of Environment, Resources, and Development (SERD), and 28% in the School of Management (SOM). Of the new students, 72% are pursuing Master’s degrees, while 28% have joined Doctoral programs. AIT currently hosts over 1,700 students from around the globe.
Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi underscored the importance of adaptability and time management, advising students to seize opportunities from the start of their academic journey. “Two years can pass in the blink of an eye,” he noted, encouraging engagement with AIT’s specialized centers, conferences, and seminars to broaden their learning experience.
Vice President for Administration (VPA) Russell Bruce Rein inspired students to recognize their own potential, stating, “Only you stand in the way of being yourself – that’s the reality of the world.” He emphasized that AIT offers the tools for success, but individual effort is key. Mr. Rein highlighted the importance of healthy lifestyles and respecting local laws and customs. Introducing the ‘FAT’ philosophy—Flexible, Adaptable, and Tolerant—he encouraged students to navigate cultural diversity with openness and resilience.
Deans from AIT’s schools also extended their warm welcomes. Prof. Sangam Shrestha, Dean of SET, encouraged students to embrace dedication, participate in exchange programs and internships, and leverage Thailand’s rich culture and professional landscape. Prof. P Abdul Salam, Dean of SERD, urged students to build friendships, balance academics with extracurriculars, and make use of AIT’s resources for career growth. Prof. Yuosre F. Badir, Dean of SOM, highlighted the values of critical thinking, leadership, and mindfulness, encouraging students to thrive in AIT’s multicultural setting.
AIT Student Union President Mr. A.M. Abzal Ilahi inspired his peers to foster collaboration and build lasting connections, contributing to a positive and engaging community.
Following the welcome remarks, students took part in an orientation program that introduced them to key aspects of campus life and academics at AIT. They received information about AIT’s harassment policy and activities at the Office of Sustainable Campus. Directors and staff from various units further briefed them on academic requirements, student opportunities, language support, the AIT Alumni Association, the career center, student welfare, language center services, campus-wide IT services, and policies regarding facilities management and accommodation.
The orientation laid a strong foundation for new students, giving them valuable insights and motivation for their academic journey at AIT.
