22 January 2025: Dr. Bindu Nath Lohani, Chancellor of University of Nepal and a member of the AIT Board of Trustees, recently illuminated the historical and current challenges of sustainable development in his talk at the Climate Change Seminar Series titled “Sustainable Development: Historical Evolution, Milestones, and Status”. This event, organized by the Climate Change and Sustainable Development (CCSD) Program at the AIT School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), is part of a broader series running from 14 January to 20 February. It features a lineup of distinguished speakers addressing pressing issues in sustainability and climate change.

Dr. Lohani, an AIT alumnus and Distinguished Adjunct Faculty, as well as a former Vice President of the Asian Development Bank, traced the evolution of sustainable development back to the 1970s. His detailed overview outlined key global milestones and underscored the concept’s growing importance in global discourse over the decades.

Key Global Milestones

Highlighting critical international efforts like the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, Dr. Lohani emphasized the strides made toward global environmental goals. Despite the establishment of initiatives such as the Green Climate Fund and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he pointed out the significant shortfall in global commitment needed to meet these objectives by 2030. This part of his presentation shed light on both achievements and ongoing challenges in securing adequate funding and international cooperation.

Challenges and Practical Applications

Drawing from his extensive experience, Dr. Lohani discussed the practical application of sustainability principles in critical sectors such as energy, water, transport, and urban development. He elaborated on the need for climate-resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions, emphasizing the importance of incorporating environmental, climate change, social, technical, financial, and economic considerations in development projects.

Urging Action and Adaptation

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Lohani called on future generations to prioritize sustainability and adapt to emerging trends like the circular economy and carbon-neutral technologies. He stressed that a deep understanding of these issues is crucial not only for global well-being but also for individual employability in a rapidly changing world.

A Call to Sustainable Action

Dr. Lohani’s message was clear: while progress has been made, much remains to be done. He urged all stakeholders—policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens—to intensify their efforts towards sustainable development, highlighting that the decisions we make today will shape the well-being of future generations.

This seminar series at AIT not only fosters a deeper understanding of environmental and climate change issues but also serves as a critical platform for sharing innovative solutions and inspiring global action toward a more sustainable future.
