Huzhou, China – June 12, 2025: The GIANT PRAWN 2025 conference successfully concluded on June 11, 2025, in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, marking a significant milestone in the global aquaculture sector. The event brought together researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers from around the world to discuss advancements in the farming and conservation of freshwater prawns.

Keynote speakers addressed critical topics, including disease prevention strategies, genetic improvements, and sustainable farming practices. Technical sessions provided a platform for sharing the latest research and innovations in hatchery technology, nutrition, and market development.

Founded by the aquaculture pioneer Michael New (OBE), UK, The GIANT PRAWN series continues to inspire global collaboration in freshwater prawn research and development. The Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM) Program of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), has proudly carried forward this legacy, regularly organizing the conference to foster momentum and knowledge exchange within the global prawn farming community.

“GIANT PRAWN 2025 reaffirmed the global significance of freshwater prawn farming and strengthened international cooperation for more sustainable production,” said Dr. Krishna R. Salin, Lead Organizer and Chair of the Aquaculture Program at AIT. “AIT is proud to lead this effort, driving innovation and research to advance prawn aquaculture across Asia and beyond.”

“From my first presentation at the original GIANT PRAWN in 1980, organized by Michael New in Bangkok, to this year’s event, it’s remarkable to witness 45 years of progress in freshwater prawn aquaculture,” said Dr. Patrick Sorgeloos, Emeritus Professor, Ghent University and GIANT PRAWN 2025 Keynote speaker. “This meeting highlights the sector’s growth and global drive for sustainable innovation.”

A highlight of the conference was the field trip to local prawn hatcheries and farms, offering participants a unique opportunity to observe China’s aquaculture techniques and engage with local practitioners.

The event was co-organized by the Shanghai Ocean University, China, and co-hosted by Zhejiang Institute of Freshwater Fisheries (ZIFF) and  Huzhou University, with strong support from regional and international partners.

The organizers extend their sincere appreciation to all participants, speakers, and partners for their contributions to the success of GIANT PRAWN 2025. Planning is already underway for the next edition, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. Further details will be announced soon.
