From July 23 to 25, the AIT Artificial Intelligence Technology (AI) Center successfully conducted the “Empowering NREN Institutions: Generative AI Training for Network Monitoring & Cyber Security” workshop. The program was held with the support of the European Union (EU), Asi@Connect, and the Trans Eurasia Information Network (TEIN).

Participants engaged in both theoretical and hands-on sessions, gaining practical knowledge in applying Generative AI in areas such as cybersecurity, network monitoring, and academic research.

Dr. Chalermpol Charnsripinyo, Director of the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), opened the workshop, stating, “Generative AI is one of today’s most transformative technologies. This workshop explores how it can be applied in network monitoring and cybersecurity, advancing our shared mission under Asi@Connect to strengthen collaboration, capacity, and digital resilience across NRENs in the Asia-Pacific.”
Expert-led presentations provided a strong foundation for understanding Generative AI’s potential in cybersecurity, network monitoring, research, and academia. Participants also joined two intensive training tracks: Track A on network monitoring and cybersecurity, led by Dr. Chantri Polprasert, Assistant Professor at AIT, and Track B on research and academic applications, led by Dr. Chutiporn Anutariya, Assistant Professor at AIT.
The workshop brought together 40 participants, and the trainers were certified from Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand, enabling them to deliver similar training within their own NREN institutions. The program concluded with technical deep-dive presentations and a Certification Awarding Ceremony.

Dr. Mongkol Ekpanyapong, Director of the AIT AI Center, stated that the initiative demonstrates the Center’s dedication to providing the Asia-Pacific region with AI-based solutions that tackle real-world issues and foster a more robust, resilient digital ecosystem. He also expressed sincere thanks to all trainers, experts, and participants from DrukREN, CamREN, iDREN, LERNet, NREN, PREGINET, and ThaiREN for their crucial contributions to the success of the workshop.
Next steps include regional scaling by replicating the program in more TEIN countries after initial success. Content will expand through feedback and future sessions to cover more Generative AI applications aligned with national policies, with sub-trainings fostering adoption and ongoing improvement. Certified trainers will build regional Generative AI communities for peer support, measuring impact via post-training reports. The project aims to secure further funding and establish partnerships in AI-driven cybersecurity and network management.
