The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) expresses its profound sorrow at the passing of Professor Emeritus Dr. Karl E. Weber, a distinguished scholar, leader, and long-serving member of the AIT community, who passed away on 18 March 2026 in Bangkok.

Professor Weber joined AIT in February 1978 as a German Government seconded faculty member and went on to dedicate more than two decades of exemplary service to the Institute. Over the course of his career, he made outstanding contributions to teaching, research, and institution-building across a wide range of fields, including regional rural development planning, environmental conservation and natural resource management, human resources development, urban planning and development, gender and development, and participatory planning.

A pioneering academic and institution builder, Professor Weber played a defining role in shaping AIT’s academic and strategic trajectory during critical periods of its growth. He served as Chairman of the Human Settlements Development (HSD) Division, Founding Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Vice President for Management. At pivotal moments, he also assumed the responsibilities of Acting President and Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs, providing steady, principled leadership and a clear vision for the Institute’s future.

Beyond his formal leadership roles, Professor Weber was deeply engaged in the governance and intellectual life of AIT. He contributed extensively to key institutional bodies, including the Board of Trustees, Academic Senate, Policy and Planning Committee, and the Appointment and Promotion Committee, which he chaired during his tenure as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His thoughtful stewardship helped shape policies and academic standards that continue to guide the Institute today.

Professor Weber’s influence extended far beyond campus boundaries. He was instrumental in leading major international development partnerships, including the CIDA/AIT Human Settlements Training Project, the Broad-Based Development Programme, and the Canadian Universities Consortium Partnership Project. A prolific scholar, he authored and co-authored hundreds of publications, research reports, and institutional strategy documents—many of which remain foundational references in the fields of sustainable and participatory development.

Yet, it is through his role as an educator and mentor that Professor Weber leaves his most enduring legacy. He supervised 23 doctoral dissertations and 136 master’s theses and guided countless other students as a mentor and thesis committee member. Known for his intellectual rigor, humility, and deep commitment to student development, he inspired generations of graduates who continue to advance human-centered, participatory, and sustainable development practices across Asia and beyond. His influence lives on not only in academic scholarship but also in the policies, communities, and institutions shaped by his students.

Even after his formal retirement, Professor Weber remained closely connected to AIT as Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Adjunct Professor, continuing to contribute to advisory roles and institutional initiatives. His service extended to the AIT Hall of Fame Selection Panel and committees of the Board of Trustees, reflecting his unwavering dedication to the Institute until his final years.

“Professor Weber’s lifelong dedication to AIT, to Thailand, and to the global academic community has left an indelible mark on our institution,” said AIT President Prof. Pai-Chi Li. “He was not only a distinguished scholar and leader but also a mentor whose influence will continue to guide generations to come.”

The AIT community mourns the loss of an exceptional academic, leader, and mentor and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and alumni around the world. While we grieve his passing, we honor a life devoted to knowledge, service, and the advancement of sustainable development.
