Topic: Re-designing Research Data Management Practices: A Perspective on Advancing Open Science
Abstract: Research Data Management (RDM) is the activities of defining and implementing methods for storing, processing, and accessing data generated by research activities. Efficient RDM implementation is a critical challenge for researchers. In leading fields such as life sciences, high-energy physics, materials science, and social sciences, specific tasks and procedures for systematically implementing RDM have been developed. Furthermore, there has been a growing expectation for implementing generalized RDM under the open science movement. However, RDM-related activities practiced in various fields are often incompatible, with fragmented tasks and procedures and tacit knowledge. In order to generalize the practices of each field, it is necessary to re-design these fragmented tasks and procedures, while repeatedly attempting to generalize practices across fields.
To address these issues, I have analyzed RDM practices across multiple fields from a cross-disciplinary perspective and undertaken efforts to re-design them in a more generalized form. This seminar will introduce two studies to analyze and formalize RDM activities; by researchers and by data curators in each field. I will also explain the ontology techniques used to represent generalized RDM activities.
