Title: Achieving Energy Neutrality in Self-powered LoRa Networks via Embedded Intelligence
Abstract:
LoRa technology has emerged as a promising enabler for the realization of large-scale Internet-of-Things systems. To enhance network longevity, LoRa devices can be powered by energy harvesting, capturing power from surrounding environments. Despite being sustainable, ambient energy sources such as solar energy are weak and sporadic. They cannot be used to power LoRa devices directly. To make power supply more stable, LoRa devices must store harvested energy in rechargeable energy storage for future use. Because the capacity of rechargeable energy storage can be very limited, LoRa devices may exhaust harvested energy rapidly. Such power failures render them inoperative until sufficient energy is harvested, resulting in intermittent operation. Besides reducing the reliability and availability of LoRa networks, the intermittent operation can expose LoRa devices to security threats. As a means to circumvent intermittent operation, LoRa devices should operate in an energy-neutral manner by limiting energy consumption to harvested energy. In this talk, we will first explore self-powered LoRa networks and the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of solar energy. Then, we will discuss the design and efficiency of embedded intelligence for energy-harvesting predictions. Finally, we will examine various embedded intelligence-based energy management algorithms designed to achieve energy neutrality in self-powered LoRa networks.
