Title: Engineering Intelligent Communication Systems: From Advanced Wireless Communications to AI-enabled Applications
Abstract: Recent advances in wireless communications, Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the development of intelligent communication systems that extend beyond conventional data transmission to address real-world societal challenges. This presentation discusses a problem-driven research approach that integrates communication engineering, embedded systems, smart networks, signal processing, and AI to develop practical, affordable, and deployable solutions, particularly for resource-constrained environments.
The presentation begins with the design and optimization of low-cost antennas for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication, highlighting electromagnetic design, simulation, and performance optimization. It then presents the development of intelligent communication platforms, including a LoRa-based multi-node wireless sensor network and a customized smart door lock system, demonstrating the application of advanced wireless communication and AIoT technologies in real-world scenarios. Finally, the presentation discusses AI-augmented telehealth systems for the screening of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), otitismedia, Down’s syndrome, oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), and oral cancer, with emphasis on communication infrastructure, clinical workflow integration, and practical deployment in resource-constrained settings.
Through these case studies, the presentation illustrates how advanced wireless communications, AIoT, and artificial intelligence can be integrated to develop intelligent communication systems that create meaningful societal impact while outlining future research directions in connected healthcare, smart networks, and next-generation communication systems.
