China-Thai Collaboration in Environmental Protection Seminar Series#1:
Introduction
Thailand’s historically significant network of canals, once a vital network of transportation, irrigation, and cultural heritage, has become increasingly imperiled by environmental degradation. Over time, these waterways have been subjected to a confluence of pollutants, including untreated industrial discharges, domestic wastewater, and improper waste disposal practices. The resulting phenomenon of black canal odor not only disrupts daily life for residents but also poses a demonstrably serious threat to public health, with potential for waterborne diseases and respiratory complications.
China has faced similar challenges in the past and has made significant advancements in environmental technology and policy implementation. Various Chinese cities have successfully employed innovative solutions to restore their polluted water bodies, including bioengineering techniques, eco-friendly physical treatments, and comprehensive water management strategies. The success of these initiatives provides valuable lessons and adaptable technologies that can be effectively applied in the Thai context. By leveraging the combined expertise and experience of both China and Thailand, this seminar aspires not only to sharing the insights and innovations in mitigate the black odorous urban river problem but also to strengthen bilateral ties and promote the regional adoption of sustainable water pollution control practices.
