Workshop on the Importance of Regional Monitoring and Assessment of Plastic Pollution: Enhancing National Capacity for Regional Actions

11 Jul 2024
8:30am - 5:00pm

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme, is organizing a workshop on the Importance of Regional Monitoring and Assessment of Plastic Pollution: Enhancing National Capacity for Regional Actions. We cordially invite everyone to join this important event to learn, engage, and contribute to regional efforts in combating plastic pollution.

Background

Plastic pollution is of high concern due to its transboundary movement, creating major impacts at the regional and sub-regional levels. Plastic pollution spreads through water as a medium (riverine plastic pollution and marine litter). Hence, regional monitoring, assessment, and actions could be more effective and efficient in addressing plastic pollution. To convince governments and stakeholders of the need for regional actions, it is important to monitor and assess plastic pollution at the regional level in addition to the national level. Transboundary plastic pollution poses a significant threat to the health of our oceans, ecosystems, and societies. As plastic waste transcends national borders, regional collaboration is crucial for effective mitigation and management. This workshop will examine the challenges and opportunities for regional monitoring of plastic pollution, with a focus on key areas such as gaps in regional capacity for monitoring, including policy harmonization, data collection, knowledge sharing, and collaborative monitoring systems. The workshop will highlight the importance of regional cooperation, resource mobilization, and innovative solutions for capacity building to monitor and assess plastic pollution and its impacts at the regional level.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a defining environmental challenge of our time. With rivers and oceans carrying plastic waste across vast distances, its impact transcends national borders, demanding regional and global solutions. Recognizing this interconnectedness, various regions have initiated collaborative efforts to tackle this complex issue.
