01 Apr 2025
AIT

Project location– Maldives, Cambodia

Project budget– 2,150,000 THB

Donor– United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP), Kenya

Project duration – 4/Oct/24- 28/Apr/26

Primary SDG Goal of focus: 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities

Related SDG Goals of Focus:   13. Climate action

Description– The Project aims at strengthening the capacity of countries to gradually attain the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guideline (AQG) interim targets 3 by focusing on the main sources of air pollution and their health impacts. The direct outcome of the project is that the capacities of governments in the focus regions are strengthened to act towards cleaner air, through enhanced regulatory frameworks and policies, and the uptake of air pollution reduction measures by key high-impact sectors actors. Cambodia has been selected as one of the pilot countries for this project.

The Maldives was one of the first countries to join the Paris Agreement in April 2016. Since then, the commitment under UNFCCC has faced inadequate institutionalization, low data availability, sporadic documentation practices, and insufficient national technical capacity. Therefore, there is a need to build the institutional capacity of the relevant stakeholders, especially line ministries, authorities and academia for them to be able to elaborate transport sector GHG inventories in a sustainable, harmonized, and self-sufficient manner. The Maldives’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology also recognizes the need for capacity building to develop transportation emission inventories to provide more specific data to build more accurate inventories. The effort builds on the Maldives’s National SLCP Plan, and other government policies such as the National Action Plan on Air Pollutants.
