10.6 Measures against discrimination


10.6.1 Non-discriminatory admissions policy

AIT has an admission policy on non-discrimination to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment is reflected in our comprehensive policies against harassment, abuse, and discrimination. We strictly prohibit any behavior, whether physical, verbal, written, or visual, that targets individuals based on religion, nationality, race, social background, gender, age, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, or disability. Acts such as sexual harassment, bullying, and invasion of privacy are considered serious disciplinary offenses and are met with appropriate actions. AIT ensures that all employees and students contribute to a fair and unbiased atmosphere, promoting equality and understanding within our diverse community.

10.6.2 Access to university track underrepresented groups applications

AIT is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive campus community. We actively measure and track applications and admissions of underrepresented and potentially underrepresented groups. Our dedication to this endeavor ensures that we not only attract a broad range of talented individuals but also monitor our progress in creating an inclusive and equitable educational environment. We believe that by continuously measuring and tracking these metrics, we can implement strategies to enhance access and opportunities for all, fostering a richer and more vibrant learning experience for our entire university community.
Evidently, 88% of AIT’s applicants in 2022 were from low income and lower mddle income countries / regions / provinces.
1131 number of AIT’s applicants were Female and 2,733 were male.

10.6.3 Access to university underrepresented groups recruit

For the Spring Semester starting in January, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) initiated scholarships for master’s program that will allow four female students from Afghanistan to obtain an education at AIT.  AIT, the generous donors of these scholarships, and the student recipients are all contributing to the goal of the International Women’s Day 2022:  Break the Bias.

10.6.4 Anti-discrimination policies

AIT upholds its commitment to a harmonious, respectful, and inclusive community through our Policy and Procedures and Student Handbook on Harassment, Abuse, and Discrimination. Guided by five fundamental principles, every member, including trustees, faculty, staff, students, and outreach program participants, is expected to foster an environment of equality and respect. AIT strictly prohibits all forms of harassment, abuse, and discrimination, addressing issues like sexual harassment, bullying, and abuse of supervisory authority. We emphasize the significance of confidentiality, ensuring that individuals reporting violations are protected without fear of reprisal. Our comprehensive approach includes both informal methods, such as consultations and direct communication, and formal grievance procedures. A dedicated grievance committee, appointed by the President, ensures fair investigations and recommendations, respecting the privacy of all involved parties. AIT’s commitment to these policies ensures a secure and inclusive atmosphere for everyone in our diverse community.

Those with academic or administrative supervisory authority, permanent or temporary, over faculty, staff or students, should use such authority with respect, sensitivity, and solely for the purposes stated or implied in Institute objectives and policies. 5. The opportunities, services, facilities and support offered by AIT should be compatible with the purposes of the Institute, and be open impartially to everyone in the community according to qualification, performance and achievement. 10.6.5 University diversity officer

AIT recognizes that diversity, equity, and inclusion are necessary to achieving its mission of providing high-quality education and research in engineering, environment, and management studies.

The Office of Human Resources Services safeguards that AIT is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of AIT international community. It is responsible for advising and implementing policies, programs, and trainings related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights at AIT.

The OHRS is entrusted by the administration to ensure that AIT is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, and staff. The office works closely with other departments and stakeholders to develop and implement policies and programs that promote DEI. These policies and programs include but are not limited to:

• Equal Opportunity Policy: This policy ensures that all individuals are treated fairly and without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation or any other legally protected characteristic.
• Diversity and Inclusion Policy: This policy promotes diversity and inclusion in all aspects of AIT’s operations, including recruitment, retention, and promotion of faculty, staff, and students.
• Training and Development Programs: The OHRS provides training and development programs to faculty, staff, and students to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. These programs include workshops, seminars, and training sessions on topics such as unconscious bias, cultural competency, and inclusive leadership.

OHRS works to assure that AIT becomes a preferred international non-profit employer which can attract, develop and retain high-caliber employees who experience a high degree of job satisfaction. Its mission is to help develop organizational characteristics where employees, faculty, students, and visitors are highly valued and treated with respect.

OHRS ensures compliance with human resources policies, procedures and decisions. It provides assistance in recruitment and placement, managing performance appraisal, career planning, staff development, salary administration and management of employee welfare and benefits. It also supports labor relations, grievance and discipline, reconciling differences and reaching consensus in the promotion of effective working relationships.

In a multinational environment such as AIT campus, AIT provides mentoring/counselling/peer support programs to support students, faculty and staffs including those from underrepresented groups on academic and non-academic matters.

10.6.8 Disability facility services

Students from various universities, including AIT, shared their innovations to provide solutions to the problems faced by the elders and people with disabilities in a ‘digitalized time’ at the SDG Open Hack Bangkok 2022, organized from July 1-3, 2022 at the AIT Entrepreneurship Center. 

Aiming to address the aging society’s needs and improve the lives of people with limitations, the event’s theme was “Digital Solutions for the Wellness of Elders and People with Disabilities.” Jointly organized by the Department of Development and Sustainability, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and the University of Geneva in a Hybrid Mode (online and onsite at AIT Entrepreneurship Center), the event saw the participation of 14 teams from different universities around the world.
