AIT Global Water Sanitation Center – Webinar – 2

07 Nov 2022
2:00pm - 2:15pm

AIT Global Water and Sanitation Center (GWSC) would like to invite you to attend the Webinar #2 on SDG 6.3.1 Data Governance & Policies for Wastewater Management. This webinar will be held on the 7th November 2022, 14:00 to 16:15 hrs Bangkok Time GMT+7 (Virtual).

Wastewater treatment and its monitoring are a neglected area of the water cycle. In general, the sector has suffered from many decades of neglect, which has resulted in woefully inadequate treatment and discharge in many countries. Inadequate wastewater treatment and discharge are causing significant damage to the environment as well as to human health and economy, even in developed economies. As new threats are also identified in the form of priority and emerging pollutants in urban and industrial (treated) wastewater effluents, strong efforts must be made to improve wastewater management, treatment and reuse.

The ultimate objective of this framework is to help countries achieve Target 6.3 by promoting wastewater safe treatment and reuse among sanitation and water utilities, through stimulated investment. Through the “Urban Wastewater 2030” initiative, UN-Habitat, in partnership with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand and the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) aim to provide support and technical assistance to municipal or national water utilities regionally, by identifying their needs and challenges so as to improve their capacity to measure, monitor, report and use wastewater data and information. This information should inform sustainable water resources management and policy decisions guided by the polluter pays principle. The improvement of utilities capacity to generate reliable wastewater data and information should also orient follow up investments from donors where gaps are identified. The programme of activities under this cooperation will benefit utilities generating valuable data and that, to some extent, are already informing governmental institutions, ministries of water/environment or equivalent institutions, for the preparation of national statistics on wastewater production and treatment.
